Protected Characteristics and British Values

At East Hunsbury Primary School we have a simple mantra:

Be You. Be Proud.

We want every child to see the brilliance in themselves and in others. Diversity is something we embrace and celebrate. Through our curriculum, reading spines and assemblies we actively teach children about tolerance, kindness and the importance of understanding different perspectives.

How we embed British Values and Inclusion:

  • Every term we hold a World Views assembly, helping children understand the lens through which others see the world.

  • We run assemblies on British Values, sharing stories about difference, inclusivity and embracing others.

We use real-life opportunities such as:
  • School elections for roles like Parliamentarians

  • Visiting Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Celebration

  • Taking part in Interfaith Week, Neurodiversity Week and Black History Month

  • We welcome visiting speakers who share their knowledge and experiences of different world views through workshops and assemblies

Our curriculum is rich with units that promote understanding and respect, such as:
  • Coming to England (Year 2)

  • Changing the World (Year 5)*

  • Our PSHE curriculum, alongside our value Be Kind and rule Be Respectful, reinforces these principles every day.

  • Year 1's curriculum is complemented by a visitor who comes in to share their knowledge and experience of Shabbat.

  • Year 4's curriculum is enriched by a visitor from the Sikh Education Service.

  • In Year 6, children attend a Faith Tour in Bedford where they learn about a range of worldviews and their sacred places.

Celebrating Individuality and Diversity

We take part in Positive Noticing Day, where every child is recognised for something brilliant about themselves. During Black History Month, children create Power Portraits to celebrate inspirational figures. Each year group has a reading spine that includes books teaching about Protected Characteristics and British Values.

Our Behaviour Policy reflects our commitment to equality and respect and our mission is clear: to equip children with the skills and values to contribute to making a better world - and understanding British Values and Protected Characteristics is central to that.
