Our Library and Reading for Pleasure
Reading at the Heart of East Hunsbury Primary School
At East Hunsbury Primary School (EHPS) reading is not just something we do - it is who we are. From the very first day a child joins us reading is nurtured, celebrated and championed. Our mission is simple but powerful: to find the reader within every child and to help them discover the joy, confidence and opportunities that reading brings.
Every day is a reading day at EHPS and our whole community - pupils, staff and families - works together to make reading an exciting and meaningful part of school life.
We are incredibly proud of our reading culture at East Hunsbury Primary School. Reading is celebrated, valued and lived every day - in classrooms, in the library and beyond.
At EHPS we don’t just teach children to read.
We teach them to love it.

Our Magnificent School Library
Sitting at the very heart of our school is our much-loved library - a calm, cosy and inspiring space dedicated to celebrating books. Bright, welcoming and full of adventure it is a place where children want to linger, explore and read.
The library is home to around 7,000 carefully chosen books covering every genre and interest. From graphic novels to classics, from brand-new authors to old favourites every child can find something that speaks to them. Our shelves also hold a rich selection of non-fiction books that support learning across subjects such as History, Geography and Science and inspire children’s own writing.
We have made a significant investment to ensure our collection reflects our diverse community because it matters to us that every child can see themselves represented in stories.
If a book isn’t available children can recommend new titles helping shape the library themselves. Similarly, you will find a collection of symbolised books that have a simplified text and dyslexia-friendly font. Even better - each book in this collection has a unique QR code to access the free signing video and audio Book!
Each class visits the library weekly with many children returning far more often - because when reading is joyful children choose it. Our librarian, Mrs de Chastelain (universally agreed to be the best in the universe), works alongside our Reading Ambassadors to keep the library organised, exciting and welcoming.
